The 7th Fraunhofer Innovation and Technology Platform (FIT) 2025, held in New Delhi, marked a significant stride in Indo-German collaboration in the fields of microelectronics and semiconductors.
The event saw the unveiling of a joint knowledge paper co-developed by Germany’s Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and India’s EPIC Foundation, laying out a strategic roadmap for innovation, skilling, and co-development in next-generation chip technologies.
Organised by Fraunhofer, Europe’s largest applied research organisation, and supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the day-long conference brought together top-level government officials, scientists, academics, and industry leaders from both nations.
Key areas of focus at the event included CMOS chip design, sensor systems, MEMS, advanced packaging, system reliability, and workforce development, reflecting India's growing ambitions in semiconductor self-reliance.
Leading a 12-member expert delegation from Germany, Prof. Dr. Albert Heuberger, Spokesman for the Fraunhofer Microelectronics Group and Executive Director of Fraunhofer IIS, delivered the keynote address.
"Microelectronics is not optional, it is foundational. At Fraunhofer FMD, we bridge the gap between research and industry, and are excited to support India’s ambitious semiconductor mission,” he stated.
The jointly released knowledge paper highlights key domains for Indo-German collaboration, including sensor technologies, packaging innovation, MEMS, power electronics, and skilling frameworks. It builds on Fraunhofer’s successful lab-to-market model and the EPIC Foundation’s policy expertise.
Welcoming delegates, Anandi Iyer, Director of Fraunhofer India, said, “India is a beacon of audacious progress. Fraunhofer has believed in this growth story for 18 years, contributing EUR 70 million in research projects, 60 percent from medium-sized enterprises.”
The valedictory session featured remarks by Dr. Philipp Ackermann, German Ambassador to India, and Suman Bery, Vice Chairperson of NITI Aayog, followed by a high-powered panel discussion with industry stakeholders and Fraunhofer researchers.
The Fraunhofer Innovation and Technology Platform is a biennial flagship forum for Indo-German knowledge exchange in cutting-edge applied sciences and technologies.
