India has made significant strides in bolstering its battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity, reaching a milestone of 219.1 MWh as of March 2024.

It may be noted that India embarked on enhancing energy storage capabilities with initial pilot projects in 2013, and continues to ramp up its infrastructure to meet escalating energy demands.

According to a report, India is on track to add 1.6 GWh of standalone battery energy storage systems and integrate 9.7 GW of renewable energy projects with energy storage by 2027. The surge in capacity underscores India's commitment to enhancing grid flexibility and stability amidst a rapid expansion in renewable energy sources.

As of the first quarter of 2024, India added 120 MWh (approximately 40 MW) of new BESS capacity, with solar photovoltaic systems combined with BESS accounting for a dominant 90.6% of the installed capacity. Chhattisgarh leads the states with the highest BESS installations, comprising 54.8% of the cumulative capacity.

Moreover, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) reports that India's operational pumped hydro storage capacity stood at 3.3 GW as of March 2024, with substantial capacities concentrated in Telangana and West Bengal. Additionally, Rajasthan emerges as a key region for standalone BESS development, buoyed by favorable state policies and energy storage mandates.

Going forward, India has issued tenders for a total of 57 GW and auctioned 11.5 GW of energy storage projects, demonstrating a robust commitment to expand its energy storage infrastructure. These initiatives are expected to play a pivotal role in optimizing the utilization of renewable energy resources across the country.
