India Curtails 8,133 GWh of Solar Power in April-June Amid Grid Constraints

India has curtailed 8,133 GWh of solar power between April and June 2026 as the grid faced challenges in absorbing excess daytime generation, Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Naik said that in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

According to data from Grid Controller of India Ltd, solar power curtailment and restrictions were undertaken to maintain grid security and address the mismatch between the commissioning of transmission infrastructure and renewable energy projects.

Of the total curtailment, 2,417 GWh was recorded in April, 3,235 GWh in May and 2,481 GWh in June.

In a separate reply, Naik said that the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana had received 75,25,418 applications since its launch in February 2024, with 39,72,447 rooftop solar systems installed, benefiting 48,02,717 households as of July 22, 2026.

The government has released INR 27,343.90 crore as Central Financial Assistance under the scheme. During 2025-26, 18.71 lakh rooftop solar systems were installed, adding 6.7 GW of cumulative capacity and benefiting 22.71 lakh households.
