India Crosses 300 GW of Non-Fossil Fuel Capacity, Achieves Over 60 Percent of 2030 Target
India’s non-fossil fuel-based installed electricity generation capacity has reached 300.50 GW as of July 31, 2026, comprising 164.59 GW solar, 58.14 GW wind, 57.24 GW hydro, 11.75 GW bio-power and 8.78 GW nuclear capacity.

India has crossed the 300 GW milestone in non-fossil fuel-based installed electricity generation capacity, reaching 300.50 GW as of July 31, 2026.
The achievement means India has already surpassed 60 percent of its 2030 target, with non-fossil fuel sources now accounting for more than 54 percent of the country’s total installed electricity generation capacity of around 552 GW.
As of July 31, 2026, India’s non-fossil fuel capacity comprised 164.59 GW of solar power, 58.14 GW of wind power, 57.24 GW of large and small hydropower, 11.75 GW of bio-power and 8.78 GW of nuclear power, as per a statement by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
Solar energy continues to be the primary driver of India’s clean energy expansion. Solar capacity has increased to around 164.59 GW, from just 2.8 GW in 2014. Wind power capacity has similarly grown to more than 58 GW, compared with around 21 GW in 2014.
The pace of capacity addition has accelerated significantly in recent years. During FY2025-26, India added a record 55.29 GW of non-fossil fuel-based electricity generation capacity, including 44.6 GW of solar power and 6 GW of wind power.
The expansion in installed capacity has been accompanied by a sharp rise in renewable energy generation. Renewable energy generation increased from 190.96 billion units (BU) in FY2014-15 to 477.79 BU in FY2025-26, reflecting the growing contribution of clean energy to India’s electricity mix.
Alongside capacity addition, India has been strengthening its domestic clean energy manufacturing ecosystem to reduce supply-chain dependence and support the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision. The Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) for Solar PV Modules has crossed the 200 GW milestone, compared with just 2.3 GW in 2014. The expansion has been supported by policy measures including the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which is aimed at building domestic manufacturing capabilities for high-efficiency solar modules.
The government has positioned the clean energy transition as extending beyond climate commitments, with renewable energy increasingly linked to industrial competitiveness, energy security, domestic manufacturing and economic resilience.
MNRE is also pursuing industrial decarbonisation through the National Green Hydrogen Mission, with a focus on developing India as a global hub for the production, utilisation and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
