In a major step toward sustainable port infrastructure, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the country’s first indigenously developed 1 MW Green Hydrogen Plant at the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Kandla, Gujarat.

The facility, fully engineered and executed by Indian teams in collaboration with Larsen & Toubro (L&T), has a production capacity of 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen per year. Commissioned in a record four months, the plant is part of a larger 10 MW Green Hydrogen project, for which the foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bhuj on May 26.

“This is not just a technological milestone but a beacon of India’s green transformation under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” said Sonowal during the inauguration. “The Deendayal Port Authority has translated this vision into action, demonstrating speed, scale, and skill aligned with the Maritime India Vision 2030," he added.

Describing the plant as a model for future-ready hydrogen ecosystems, the minister praised the project’s role in driving maritime decarbonisation and strengthening India’s clean energy credentials under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The inauguration was attended by Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shantanu Thakur, Ports Secretary T.K. Ramachandran, DPA Chairman Sushil Kumar Singh, and senior officials from the ministry, port authority, and L&T.

Thakur said the project represents “a proud moment not only for Gujarat but for the entire country,” positioning India as a rising force in the global green hydrogen economy.

The Deendayal Port Authority has previously led sustainability efforts in the maritime sector, including the deployment of India’s first made-in-India all-electric green tug. With the commissioning of the hydrogen plant, DPA further reinforces its role as a frontrunner in eco-friendly port operations.

The project underscores India’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions and setting new standards in green port infrastructure development.
