India has commissioned 132 Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) plants with a cumulative production capacity of 920 tonnes per day, marking a key milestone in the country’s clean energy transition.
In a social media post, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said that the Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) initiative is converting agricultural and organic waste into clean fuel while supporting rural livelihoods and reducing carbon emissions. He added that additional CBG capacity is currently under development.
Launched on October 1, 2018, SATAT aims to build a nationwide ecosystem for producing CBG from waste and biomass. Under the programme, oil and gas marketing companies such as Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum, GAIL and Indraprastha Gas Ltd. have invited entrepreneurs to supply CBG for commercial distribution.
Separately, Puri highlighted steps taken to strengthen domestic energy production and curb import dependence. He said that the government offered 50 new exploration and production blocks in December 2025, covering oil, gas and coal-bed methane assets.
Of these, 25 blocks were offered under the Open Acreage Licensing Policy Round X, spanning about 1.83 lakh square kilometres across onshore, shallow water, deepwater and ultra-deepwater areas. In addition, 55 discoveries across nine contract areas have been included under the Discovered Small Field Bid Round-IV, while coal-bed methane bid rounds for 2025 and 2026 comprise 16 blocks.
The Minister said that the new bidding rounds offer incentives such as graded royalty rates, pricing freedom, cost recovery provisions and relaxed eligibility norms.
He added that recent legislative reforms, including the Oilfields (Regulation and Development) Amendment Act, 2025 and the PNG Rules, 2025, have created a unified regulatory framework and improved ease of doing business in India’s energy sector.
