India and Australia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral energy security, expanding energy trade and investment, and building resilient supply chains amid growing geopolitical uncertainties and disruptions in global energy markets.
In a joint statement issued during high level bilateral engagements, both countries highlighted their shared commitment to open markets and rules based trade, while expressing concern over the ongoing situation in the Middle East and its impact on global energy, resources and commodity supply chains.
The two nations agreed to deepen cooperation through the India Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), ongoing negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA), and other bilateral frameworks to support stronger energy trade and private sector investment.
Recognising Australia's role as a key supplier of liquefied natural gas to India and India's position as an important exporter of liquid fuels and downstream petroleum products to Australia, both countries pledged to ensure the uninterrupted flow of energy products while encouraging investments across the energy value chain.
India and Australia also announced the completion of administrative arrangements required to enable the export of Australian uranium to India for exclusively peaceful purposes under International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards, in accordance with the Australia India Nuclear Cooperation Agreement signed in 2015.
The joint statement also emphasised strengthening energy supply chain resilience through closer regional cooperation, accelerated energy transition efforts, wider deployment of renewable energy resources and continued support for open energy trade. Both countries acknowledged that increasing electrification of their energy systems will play a significant role in enhancing long term energy security.
The two governments further recognised the energy security challenges faced by Pacific Island Countries and underscored the importance of reliable energy supplies in supporting their resilience and economic development.
Reaffirming their broader partnership, India and Australia committed to maintaining stable and reliable supplies of coal, diesel, other liquid fuels and natural gas while accelerating cooperation on low carbon fuels. Australia also acknowledged India's leadership through the Global Biofuels Alliance initiative.
The joint statement concluded with a call for regional partners to work together to keep global energy resource supply chains open, supporting energy security, economic stability and shared prosperity across the Indo Pacific region.
