In the next three years, India plans to install 70,000 electric vehicle charging stations at gas stations across the country.

India and Japan have teamed up to install and set up a charging station network across India for electric vehicles. According to Nikkei Asia, the two countries would work together to construct easy-to-build electric vehicle charging stations based on Japanese standards that are said to reduce installation costs by two-thirds.

The CHAdeMO Association, which is in charge of Japan's charging standard, will collaborate with India's standards committee. Mahindra Electric and Maruti Suzuki are among the companies on the drafting committee. According to the source, the committee intends to present a draught proposal to the Bureau of Indian Standards this year, with the goal of official acceptance by 2023.

Global vehicle manufacturing giants like Nissan and Toyota are among CHAdeMO's about 500 member businesses. It aims to promote the use of electric vehicles not just in India, but also in rising Southeast Asian countries that lack the requisite EV charging infrastructure.

According to the study, the proposed specs would allow for a maximum output of 22 kilowatts, which is half of what charging stations in Japan typically produce. The cost of establishing a charging point, which is currently between $15,000 and $23,000, maybe reduced to less than $10,000.

Because of the decreased power output, charging takes twice as long as regular Japanese EV chargers for the same battery. However, because electric vehicle demand in emerging nations is projected, to begin with, compact vehicles with modest battery capacity, this may be a reasonable trade-off.

This collaboration will help India improve its EV charging environment, which is predicted to become a key market for electric vehicles by the end of the decade. By 2030, India wants electric vehicles to account for 30% of total new car sales.
