India and Canada have signed a joint statement on energy cooperation on the sidelines of India Energy Week 2026 (IEW’26) in Goa, marking the first-ever participation of a Canadian Cabinet Minister at the event. Timothy Hodgson, Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, met with India’s Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, to relaunch the India-Canada Ministerial Energy Dialogue.

The meeting follows the direction of the Prime Ministers of India and Canada during the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, June 2025, where both leaders emphasised restarting senior-level and working-level engagements. The ministers highlighted the critical importance of energy security and supply diversity for economic stability and wellbeing.

India and Canada recognised the complementary nature of their energy sectors. Canada is expanding liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects, crude oil exports via the Trans Mountain Expansion pipeline, and LPG exports to Asia, while India remains the world’s third-largest oil consumer, fourth-largest LNG importer, and third-largest LPG consumer, with the fourth-largest refining capacity globally. Both countries agreed to deepen bilateral trade in LNG, LPG, crude oil, and refined petroleum products, while exploring joint investment opportunities worth billions.

The dialogue also covered climate and clean energy collaboration, including renewable energy, hydrogen, biofuels, sustainable aviation fuel, battery storage, critical minerals, and the use of artificial intelligence in energy systems. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to government-to-government engagement, business partnerships, and multilateral cooperation to strengthen energy supply chains and support global climate objectives.
