India Added 5.7 GW of Utility-Scale Solar Capacity, 24 Percent Less than Target for FY-20

India added about 5.7 gigawatt (GW) of new utility-scale solar capacity in the financial year 2019-20 (FY20), which is 24 per cent less than the 7.5 GW target set for current year, according to a recent report by JMK Research and Analytics.

“As per Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), in FY20 about 5.7 GW of new utility-scale solar capacity was added in India. Compared to previous year installations, FY20 installations are also marginally lesser -- about one per cent,” said JMK Research and Analytics in its report.

It added that in FY20, Rajasthan added a maximum capacity of 1.8 GW, followed by Tamil Nadu with 1.3 GW addition, and Karnataka with 1.1 GW addition. “Together these three states contributed about 74 per cent of all utility-scale solar installations in India in FY20,” according to the study.

About 2.1 GW of new wind capacity was added in FY20, which is about 30 per cent less than the target of 3 GW set for this fiscal year. Compared to previous year installations, FY20 wind installations were about 31 per cent higher.

Gujarat led the installations with the commissioning of 1.4 GW of new wind projects, followed by Tamil Nadu with 335 MW, and Maharashtra with 206 MW. Inox, SembCorp, Mytrah, ReNew, and Greenko were the leading players who added maximum wind capacity in FY2020, the study added.
