The Union Minister for New & Renewable Energy and Power, R.K. Singh, revealed significant advancements in India's pursuit of green hydrogen initiatives during a recent session in the Rajya Sabha.

Key highlights include the awarding of tenders under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, marking a pivotal step towards achieving the country's ambitious goals. The tender for selecting Green Hydrogen Producers has been granted to 10 companies, enabling the establishment of production facilities with a total capacity of 4,12,000 tons per annum.

Additionally, tenders for Electrolyser Manufacturers have been awarded to 8 companies, facilitating the setup of manufacturing capacities totaling 1,500 MW per annum.

Moreover, the unveiling of scheme guidelines for SIGHT Mode 2A and 2B, focusing on aggregation models for Green Ammonia and Green Hydrogen respectively, underscores India's commitment to diversifying its energy landscape. Furthermore, pilot projects for utilizing Green Hydrogen in the Shipping Sector have been initiated, indicating the government's proactive approach towards fostering innovation and sustainable practices.

A crucial component of the National Green Hydrogen Mission involves the identification and development of regions conducive to large-scale production and utilization of hydrogen. Notably, three major ports - Deendayal, Paradip, and V.O. Chidambaranar (Tuticorin) Ports - have been earmarked by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways to be developed as hydrogen hubs, signaling a strategic focus on enhancing infrastructure and facilitating the transition to clean energy sources.

With an allocated outlay of INR 19,744 crores, the National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to position India as a global hub for the production, usage, and export of Green Hydrogen and its derivatives. The mission aligns with various state-level initiatives offering incentives for setting up green hydrogen production plants, further bolstering India's position in the global green hydrogen market.

In addition, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has taken steps to regulate gas trading through the PNGRB (Gas Exchange) Regulations, 2020, with the establishment of the Indian Gas Exchange Limited (IGX) as the first gas exchange. This initiative aims to create a free and transparent gas market, fostering efficient gas trading and advancing towards a gas-based economy.
