IIT Bhilai Working Towards Cost-Effective Solar Energy with Reduced Graphene Oxide

Studies have shown that the use of RGO can increase the efficiency of solar cells made of layered halide perovskite. The use of perovskite is a promising alternative to silicon panels.

A group of researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhilai is developing efficient and cost-effective solar energy with ‘reduced graphene oxide (RGO)’. Due to its high electrical conductivity and inexpensive synthesis methods, RGO has attracted a lot of attention.

Led by Dr. Satyajit Gupta, the research, supported by funding from the Department of Science and Technology, has been published in ACS Applied Energy Materials.

Studies have shown that the use of RGO can increase the efficiency of solar cells made of layered halide perovskite. The use of perovskite is a promising alternative to silicon panels.

According to recent research, 3D halide perovskite is able to enhance solar cell efficiency by up to 25 percent. While it is easy to produce this material over large areas via simple low-temperature processing methods, the commercial production of 3D halide perovskite is challenging due to moisture-induced instability which is preventing its widespread adoption. On the other hand, 2D layered perovskites are more resistant to moisture but exhibit lower solar cell efficiency.

In this study by IIT Bhilai, the role of RGO as an interlayer was observed in decreasing the charge transfer resistance, decreasing the photoluminescence (PL) intensity, enhancing the photocurrent density during photo(electro)chemical analysis, and improving the efficiencies of solar cells of 2D layered perovskites.
