IEX Trades 13,938 MU Electricity in August, Up 20.2 Percent Year on Year

Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) recorded its highest ever monthly electricity traded volume of 13,938 MU in August 2026, marking a 20.2 percent year on year increase, as higher power demand drove greater activity across its electricity markets.

India’s energy consumption reached 169.01 billion units (BUs) in August, rising 12.85 percent year on year, according to government data. The increase in demand pushed buy bids in the Day Ahead Market up 61.7 percent year on year. The average market clearing price in the Day Ahead Market rose 22 percent to INR 4.88 per unit, while the Real Time Market recorded an average price of INR 4.41 per unit, up 30.4 percent year on year.

The Day Ahead Market, including HP DAM, traded 5,517 MU in August, compared with 4,797 MU in August 2025, registering 15 percent growth. Real Time Market volumes increased 10.6 percent to 5,565 MU from 5,029 MU a year earlier.

The Day Ahead Contingency and Term Ahead Market, including HP TAM, recorded 1,765 MU during the month, more than double the 835 MU traded in August 2025, marking a 111.3 percent year on year increase.

IEX’s Green Market, comprising the Green Day Ahead and Green Term Ahead Market segments, recorded 1,091 MU in August, compared with 930 MU a year earlier, an increase of 17.3 percent. The weighted average price in the Green Day Ahead Market stood at INR 3.92 per unit, up 5.1 percent year on year.

The Renewable Energy Certificate market recorded 2.91 lakh RECs traded during August, down 86.6 percent year on year due to lower participation. Trading sessions were held on August 12 and August 27, with clearing prices of INR 370 and INR 350 per REC, respectively.

The next REC trading sessions at IEX are scheduled for September 9 and September 30, 2026.
