IEX Posts Electricity Trading Volume of 12,983 MU, Up 18.6 Percent YoY

Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) recorded a monthly electricity traded volume of 12,983 million units (MU) in May 2026, marking an 18.6 percent year-on-year increase, supported by record electricity demand across the country.

India's energy consumption reached 164.98 billion units (BU) during the month, registering 11.5 percent growth compared to the previous year. Peak power demand touched an all-time high of 270.82 GW, boosting activity across IEX's electricity market segments.

The Day-Ahead Market (DAM), including HP-DAM, recorded a trading volume of 4,417 MU in May 2026, up 24.9 percent from 3,535 MU in the corresponding month last year. The Real-Time Market (RTM) posted volumes of 5,529 MU, reflecting a 15.9 percent year-on-year increase.

Strong demand conditions led to higher market prices. The average market clearing price in the Day-Ahead Market stood at INR 4.88 per unit, an increase of 18.3 percent year-on-year, while the average Real-Time Market clearing price rose 21.2 percent to Rs 4.16 per unit.

The Term-Ahead Market (TAM), including HP-TAM and contracts up to three months, traded 2,004 MU during the month, compared with 1,726 MU a year ago, registering growth of 16.1 percent.

In the renewable energy segment, IEX Green Market achieved a traded volume of 1,034 MU in May 2026, up 13 percent from 915 MU in May 2025. The weighted average price in the Green Day-Ahead Market remained largely stable at INR 3.60 per unit.

The Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) market witnessed trading of 6.10 lakh certificates during the month. However, REC volumes declined 65 percent year-on-year due to a sharp drop in sell bids. Trading sessions held on May 13 and May 29 cleared at INR 400 per REC.

IEX said that the next REC trading sessions are scheduled for June 10 and June 24, 2026.
