Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), a leading National Public Sector Enterprise, marked a momentous occasion with the inauguration of its Biomass-based Compressed Biogas (CBG) Plant in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, and Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas & Housing and Urban Affairs, among other dignitaries.

The CBG plant, commissioned with an investment of approximately INR 133 crores by HPCL, boasts a processing capacity of 100 Metric Tons Per Day (MTPD) of rice straw, generating 14 MTPD of CBG and 65 MTPD of solid manure.

Spread across an expansive 50 acres, the plant represents a significant stride towards reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels and aligns with the Government of India's National Biofuel Policy 2018.

Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri highlighted the plant's potential in curbing stubble burning across 17,500-20,000 acres of fields, leading to an annual reduction of 55,000 tons of CO2 emissions. The plant is expected to create direct employment for around 100 people and generate indirect employment for approximately 1000 people. Minister Puri emphasized that, in the future, over 100 similar biogas plants will be established in Uttar Pradesh.

The CBG Plant in Budaun is an initiative designed to contribute to the government's goal of reducing import dependency by 10 percent, focusing on second-generation (2G) bio-refineries and Compressed Bio-Gas Plants.

The project aims to boost farmers' income by procuring biomass from local farmers and Farmer Producer Organizations, providing livelihood opportunities to over 100 individuals. Additionally, the sale of organic manure is expected to enhance soil quality and crop yields, contributing to sustainable agriculture.

The CBG production technology has been licensed from M/s Praj Industries Limited, Pune, ensuring maximum biogas yield. The plant features a pollution-sensitive Zero Liquid Discharge design, adhering to stringent norms of the Fertilizer Control Order.

Furthermore, the project anticipates a positive environmental impact by reducing natural gas and crude imports, decreasing emissions, and contributing to climate change goals and the Swachh Bharat Mission.

The CBG Plant in Budaun, with its unique features and commitment to sustainability, marks a significant milestone in India's pursuit of renewable and eco-friendly energy solutions. The inauguration aligns with the Prime Minister's vision for a future grounded in energy access, efficiency, sustainability, and security.
