Hitachi Energy Expands Mysuru Facility with Fossil-Free Pressboard Line, INR 300 Crore Investment

Hitachi Energy India Ltd. has announced a INR 300 crore investment to expand its insulation and components manufacturing facility in Mysuru, Karnataka.

The project, expected to be completed by 2027, will double the unit’s capacity to produce extra-high-voltage pressboard and laminated board, critical insulation materials used in power and distribution transformers.

As part of the upgrade, the company will replace its fossil fuel boiler, making the Mysuru site one of the first ultra-low carbon pressboard facilities powered entirely by fossil-free process heat and electricity. The expansion forms part of Hitachi Energy India’s broader INR 2,000 crore investment plan announced in October 2024, to be deployed over four to five years.

“With this expansion, we are supporting India’s growing grid and renewable energy integration while strengthening the local manufacturing ecosystem for a sustainable future,” said N Venu, Managing Director and CEO of Hitachi Energy India.

Helmut Bockshammer, Global Product Group Manager for Transformers Insulation and Components at Hitachi Energy, added that the project will localise pressboard production, strengthen supply chains, and support the transition to renewable energy.

The Mysuru expansion is aimed at addressing a global shortage of transformers and components, with the output expected to cater not just to Indian demand but also to international markets including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Indonesia, South Korea, and South Africa.

Hitachi Energy, headquartered in Switzerland, employs more than 50,000 people across 60 countries and reported revenues of around USD 16 billion in FY2024.
