In a significant move towards sustainable and eco-friendly transportation, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated the first phase of the Rajiv Gandhi Self-Employment Start-up Yojna, introducing a pioneering E-Taxi Scheme with a robust investment of INR 680 crores.
Under the initial phase of the scheme, 500 permits for E-Taxis will be issued, with CM Sukhu expressing confidence in scaling up the number to meet the growing demand for clean and efficient transportation.
The initiative not only aims to generate self-employment opportunities for the youth but also strives to offer a sustainable and environmentally conscious alternative to traditional taxi services.
To incentivize the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), the state government is providing a 50 percent subsidy for the purchase of E-Taxis. Additionally, the stringent conditions for securing loans under the scheme will be relaxed, ensuring accessibility for a wider segment of the population.
CM Sukhu underscored the manifold benefits of the E-Taxi Scheme, emphasizing its pivotal role in reducing air pollution—a crucial step towards Himachal Pradesh's goal of becoming a Green Energy State by March 31, 2026.
Beyond E-Taxis, the government is actively encouraging the transition to electric buses (E-Buses) and electric trucks (E-Trucks). A 50 percent subsidy is offered for the purchase of these vehicles, marking a significant stride towards the state's plan to replace all diesel buses of the Himachal Road Transport Corporation with E-Buses. The first phase is set to see the procurement of 300 E-Buses.
Himachal Pradesh is also investing in the development of charging stations for electric vehicles. Seventeen E-Charging stations are scheduled to be installed within the next two months, with plans for further expansion in a phased manner.
