Haryana to Solarise All Tube Wells Under PM-KUSUM Scheme

Haryana plans to solarise all agricultural tube wells, setting up solar feeders on public land. With 1.58 lakh pumps installed, it targets 70,000 more by FY 2025–26 to aid farmers.

In a major green energy push, the Haryana government has announced an ambitious plan to solarise all agricultural tube wells in the state under the Central Government’s PM-KUSUM scheme. The move is aimed at curbing the use of diesel in irrigation and promoting clean, affordable energy for the state’s farmers.

The solarisation initiative will be rolled out in a phased manner. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has directed state officials to expedite the process and ensure efficient implementation. The shift to solar-powered irrigation is expected to significantly reduce electricity costs and fuel dependency in the agriculture sector, while also lowering carbon emissions.

A central part of the plan involves the setting up of solar feeder plants to supply dedicated solar power to tube wells. Haryana Power Generation Corporation Ltd. (HPGCL) has been tasked with identifying five-acre plots in each district for the installation of these feeders. These feeders will provide a direct and reliable source of solar energy for irrigation, enhancing energy independence for farmers.

One of the flagship projects under the plan is a 300-acre solar power plant being developed in Ganni Kheda gram panchayat, near the Raiwali sub-station in Panchkula district. The plant will serve as a large-scale example of how solar energy can power agricultural infrastructure and ensure clean, uninterrupted supply to multiple tube wells in the surrounding areas.

In addition to feeder-based solar plants, the state government will also utilize existing public spaces, such as bus stands, college campuses, and local mandis, for solar panel installations. This strategy aims to optimize underused land assets while scaling up solar capacity in rural and semi-urban regions.

Since the launch of the PM-KUSUM scheme in Haryana, more than 1.58 lakh solar pumps have already been installed. For the upcoming financial year 2025–26, the state has set a target of deploying an additional 70,000 solar pumps, backed by a budget allocation of INR 600 crore. Officials believe this expansion will ease the financial burden on farmers while supporting Haryana’s broader environmental and sustainability goals.

By integrating solar infrastructure with agricultural needs, the state aims to create a self-reliant, energy-efficient rural economy, and emerge as a model for clean irrigation practices across India.
