Gujarat has initiated Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) at five locations with a combined capacity of 870 MW to strengthen renewable energy integration and maintain grid stability across the state, according to an official release.
The state has also registered 13 additional BESS projects across Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Banaskantha, Patan and Kutch districts as part of its expanding clean energy infrastructure.
Battery storage systems play a critical role in storing electricity generated from solar and other renewable sources during peak production hours and supplying it later during periods of high demand, particularly in the evening when solar generation declines. The systems also help reduce grid stress and manage fluctuating renewable power loads.
Modhera, recognised as India’s first solar village, has launched the country’s first BESS integrated with a solar power plant. Recently, another battery storage system was commissioned at Charal in Ahmedabad’s Sanand taluka.
At present, four BESS installations are operational in Modhera in Mehsana district and Lakhpat in Kutch district. The state government has also incorporated advanced energy storage systems into the Gujarat Integrated Renewable Energy Policy 2025 to support standalone battery storage projects as well as systems linked to new and existing renewable energy installations.
According to the release, registrations for commercial and industrial battery storage projects will open after the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) receives approval, enabling businesses to integrate storage systems with solar and wind energy projects.
The state government is developing battery storage capacity through a competitive bidding process, while Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation and distribution companies are identifying suitable project locations based on grid capacity and operational requirements.
