GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals (GSK Pharma) will procure 4.95 MWp of solar power for its plant at Nashik, Maharashtra, from Clean Max Enviro Energy Solutions (CleanMax) under the group captive mechanism.

The company’s Board of Directors approved an investment of INR 1.74 crore for the solar power project, the company said in a regulatory filing.

GSK Pharma will acquire 26 percent stake in CleanMax’s special purpose vehicle (SPV) Clean Max Galapagos at INR 173.61 lakh. The acquisition will be completed within 180 days.

The company in its Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report for FY24, has mentioned that it has undertaken active projects related to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. “These include a 1 MWp solar power plant that has the potential to provide 15 percent of the electricity requirement and a 5.1 MWp solar plant, leading to a potential carbon reduction of 163 MT,” it mentioned.

In FY25, the company has consumed 52,543 GJ of energy from renewable sourcing which is about 48.64 percent of total energy consumed. In FY25, the company also installed a 330 kWp solar power plant.

To achieve its goal of having a net-zero impact on climate, GSK has set a series of ambitious targets measured against a 2020 baseline. The company aims to reduce absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent across all scopes by 2030, while investing in nature-based solutions to offset the remaining 20 percent of its footprint.

GSK is targeting 100 percent imported renewable electricity by 2025 and 100 percent renewable electricity – both imported and self-generated – by 2030 for its Scope 2 emissions. By 2045, the company plans to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain, with a 90 percent absolute reduction from the 2020 baseline and full neutralisation of all residual emissions.

In the recent past, pharmaceutical companies have increased their RE intake. In September 2025, Torrent Pharmaceuticals announced that the company would invest INR 7.92 crore for a 26 percent stake in Torrent Urja 27 for developing a captive solar-wind hybrid project in Gujarat to enhance renewable energy usage.

In May 2025, Jay Precision Pharmaceuticals, a Cipla subsidiary, announced that it would source solar power from AMPIN Energy Transition. The company acquired a 26 percent stake in SPV - AMPIN Energy C&I Eighteen at a cost of about INR 1.46 crore for setting up a captive solar power project in Maharashtra.

In March 2025, Syngene International, a Bengaluru-based pharmaceutical company, announced procuring renewable energy from O2 Power’s 201.2 MW wind-solar hybrid plant in Karnataka under a captive arrangement. In the same month, Supriya Lifescience inaugurated a state-of-the-art (SOTA) 5 MWp solar power facility in Nanded District, Maharashtra.

In February 2025, Hyderabad-based Aurobindo Pharma signed a power purchase agreement with Swarnaaskshu Solar Power to procure solar energy under a captive arrangement. It will be investing up to INR 10.40 crore for a 26 percent stake in the company's planned 30 MW AC (40 MW DC) solar plant in Telangana.

In February 2025, Mumbai-based Aarti Drugs partnered with Prozeal Green Energy to procure solar power through a captive arrangement. The company picked up a 26.25 percent stake in an SPV for INR 8.05 crore to develop a 24.40 MWp solar power plant.

In January 2025, Ahmedabad-based pharmaceutical company Concord Biotech announced that it will procure 9.9 MW wind-solar hybrid power from Clean Max Enviro Energy Solutions (CleanMax) for its manufacturing plant located at Dholka, Gujarat through a captive arrangement.
