GPS Renewables Wins EPC Contract from NTPC for India’s First Ethanol-to-Jet SAF Plant in Andhra Pradesh

GPS Renewables has been awarded an EPC contract by NTPC to build India’s first Ethanol-to-Jet (ETJ) Sustainable Aviation Fuel plant at Pudimadaka, Andhra Pradesh, with a capacity of 1,800 TPA SAF using ethanol-based feedstock. The company has partnered with Lummus Technology for process technology and licensing, and Xytel India for detailed engineering.

GPS Renewables has announced that the company has been awarded the EPC contract by NTPC to construct India’s first Ethanol-to-Jet (ETJ) Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) plant. The plant will be located at NTPC Green Energy's (NGEL) Green Hydrogen Hub in Pudimadaka, Andhra Pradesh.

As the primary contractor, GPS Renewables will deliver the project with its technology and engineering partners. Lummus Technology will provide the ETJ technology license and basic engineering for the process. Xytel India, a specialist in skid-mounted, modular, and fully automated pilot/mini plant solutions, will provide detailed engineering for the core process package.

GPS Renewables, supported by Lummus, will lead all engineering, including the Hydrogen Generation Package, and Offsites and Utilities, along with procurement, construction, start-up, and commissioning, the company stated.

The plant will produce 1,800 tonnes per annum (TPA) SAF using ethanol derived from CO2. The plant will use a demonstrated process chain: ethanol-to-ethylene conversion, olefins oligomerisation, and hydroprocessing to produce SAF and renewable diesel.

GPS Renewables' scope runs through March 2029, covering full project construction and commissioning, and 1 year of operation post commissioning.

Mainak Chakraborty, Co-founder and CEO, GPS Renewables, said, “Sustainable Aviation Fuel stands out as the most promising option for reducing emissions in a hard-to-abate sector like aviation. However, viable commercial-scale production of SAF is still limited. At GPS Renewables, we have always prioritised technologies that can accelerate India’s transition to clean energy. Our collaboration with Lummus Technology reflects that commitment. Through this partnership, our aim is to bring a proven pathway to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel from ethanol and enable the large-scale production of SAF in India.”

Romain Lemoine, Chief Business Officer, Lummus Technology, said, “This project represents a major milestone for Lummus, bringing this ethanol to jet technology from concept to commercial reality. By leveraging our integrated solution, GPS will deliver a scalable SAF configuration with reduced capital and operating costs and lower carbon intensity. India’s strong ethanol ecosystem provides an ideal launch environment and supports future global deployment.”
