The government has sanctioned three pilot projects for use of Hydrogen in steel production as part of National Green Hydrogen Mission. Earlier, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) had issued guidelines for Implementation of Pilot projects in Steel Sector under this Mission.

The objectives of the scheme were to identify advance technologies for utilising green hydrogen in steelmaking, through pilot projects.

“These pilot projects can demonstrate safe and secure operations of green hydrogen-based steel making processes, validating technical feasibility and performance, evaluating their economic viability thereby leading to low-carbon iron and steel production,” said the Ministry through a statement.

Accordingly, the proposals were invited for three components -  producing direct reduced iron (DRI) using 100 percent hydrogen using vertical shaft, using hydrogen in blast furnace to reduce coal/coke consumption and injecting hydrogen in vertical shaft based DRI making unit.

Based on the evaluations of the proposals received, MNRE has sanctioned total three pilot projects in the steel sector. Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd. in partnership with Gensol Engineering Ltd., Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar and Metsol AB, Sweden, will set up a pilot plant capacity 50 ton-per-day (TPD).

Simplex Castings Ltd. in partnership with BSBK Pvt. Ltd., Ten Eight Investment, and IIT Bhilai will set up a pilot plant with capacity of 40 TPD.

The third and the largest pilot is being taken by Steel Authority of India Ltd. The company will set up a 3200 TPD plant in Ranchi.

The government has allotted INR 347 crore to support these projects. These pilot projects are likely to be commissioned in next 3 years, paving way to the scale up of such technologies in India.

Launched on January 4, 2023 with an outlay of INR 19,744 crore allocated through FY 2029-30, aims to drive India’s clean energy transformation.

The mission is a step towards making India self-reliant through clean energy and serve as an inspiration for the global clean energy transition. “The mission will lead to significant decarbonisation of the economy, reduced dependence on fossil fuel imports, and enable India to assume technology and market leadership in Green Hydrogen,” mentioned the statement.
