Gurugram-based GNA Energy, which operates a digital OTC platform connecting electricity buyers and sellers in the Indian power market, has entered the coal exchange segment with the incorporation of its wholly owned subsidiary, Bharat Coal Exchange Pvt. Ltd. (BCX), marking a strategic expansion into commodity market infrastructure.
GNA Energy confirmed that it has received approval from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) to establish the new entity. As part of its initial commitment, the company will invest INR 100 crore to develop the platform.
BCX aims to build a robust ecosystem for organised coal trading by developing the necessary infrastructure, digital technology, and institutional partnerships. The platform will cater to both domestic and international participants and will seek regulatory clearances from the Coal Controller of India.
India remains the world’s second-largest coal market after China, with annual production exceeding 1 billion tonnes. The sector is dominated by Coal India, which contributes nearly three-fourths of domestic output. However, coal trading in India largely occurs through long-term fuel supply agreements, e-auctions, and bilateral deals, limiting price transparency.
The newly notified Coal Exchange Rules, 2025 provide a regulatory framework for structured, screen-based coal trading, paving the way for platforms like BCX.
Sanjeev Kumar, Managing Director of GNA Energy, said that the initiative is aimed at enabling transparent price discovery and improving market efficiency through a technology-driven exchange model.
GNA Energy has been expanding its digital capabilities with solutions like Vidyut AI and GNAi, and the launch of BCX signals its broader ambition to become a key player in India’s evolving energy market ecosystem.
