Flowserve and CORE Energy Bring PCP Tech to India Under US Nuclear Deal

The localisation of PCP manufacturing is a decisive step to build a resilient domestic supply chain, unlocking new capacity, supporting private participation and reinforcing energy self-sufficiency under the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.

CORE Energy Systems and Flowserve Corporation have collaborated to locally manufacture Primary Coolant Pumps (PCPs). The US Department of Energy (DOE) has granted Flowserve specific authorisation under 10 CFR Part 810. This authorisation enables Flowserve’s advanced PCP technology to be transferred to India, reflecting the trust and depth of bilateral nuclear cooperation.

Earlier, in November 2024, India’s Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) authorised CORE to collaborate with Flowserve with an assurance to the US that the transferred technology will be utilised exclusively for peaceful civil nuclear activities meeting the terms of the US government’s requirements. It marks the very first US authorisation for an Indian collaboration of this nature and scope, catalysing sovereign local manufacturing of this mission-critical nuclear reactor equipment.

Flowserve has over 5,000 pumps and 15,000 valves installed in India and more than 200 nuclear reactors worldwide. The first primary coolant pumps went into service in the 1960s and approximately 245 of these continue in operation today in 57 reactors in seven countries.

The localisation of PCP manufacturing is a decisive step to build a resilient domestic supply chain, unlocking new capacity, supporting private participation and reinforcing energy self-sufficiency under the “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives.

Speaking in this regard, Ihab Botros, Vice President and General Manager–Engineered Pumps, Flowserve, said, “As a global leader in flow control technology and solutions for the nuclear power industry, Flowserve is excited to receive official approval from the US Department of Energy to manufacture safety-critical pumps for India’s reactors at our Coimbatore, India facility. This achievement, made possible through our collaboration with CORE, marks a significant step forward in India’s nuclear growth and the global clean energy transition. With more than 5,000 pumps operating in 200+ reactors worldwide, Flowserve brings proven global expertise to support India’s growing nuclear ambitions, and we see India as an important part of the industry’s future.”

India currently operates 25 nuclear reactors generating 8,880 MW, with eight new units (6.6 GW) under construction and a target of 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047. The localisation of PCP manufacturing marks a decisive step towards building a resilient domestic supply chain for nuclear-grade components supporting private participation and aligning with the national vision of Viksit Bharat and Net Zero.

Nagesh Basarkar, Chairman and Managing Director, CORE Energy Systems, said, “For over two decades, CORE has driven India’s strategic engineering journey. This collaboration to indigenously manufacture PCPs not only delivers world-class technology to our nuclear sector, but also strengthens national supply-chain resilience. It marks a pivotal milestone in India’s march towards energy independence and a decisive step towards accomplishing the Prime Minister’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.”
