The Government of Finland is gearing up to initiate the tendering procedure for five offshore wind farm projects in public waters, marking a significant stride towards expanding the country's clean energy portfolio.

Under a recent government resolution, the selection process for implementing partners for two offshore wind power projects, named Edith and Ebba off Närpiö and Pyhäjoki and Raahe on the west coast, has been set in motion. The competitive tendering procedures for these projects are expected to be launched this year.

The Edith and Ebba offshore wind power projects collectively aim for an impressive total capacity of approximately 3,000 MW, with an estimated investment value ranging between EUR 6 billion to EUR 8 billion (USD 6.5 billion to USD 8.7 billion). Upon completion, these projects are anticipated to contribute around 14 TWh of clean electricity annually, covering over 17 percent of Finland's current electricity consumption.

The tendering process, estimated to take about a year, will involve selecting project partners through competitive bidding. The chosen partners will then acquire the rights for the offshore wind power projects, lease the designated offshore areas, and spearhead the construction of the power plants.

The government's decision on granting the right of use to the selected project partner is slated to follow the tender procedure.

This initiative aligns with Finland's commitment to bolstering its renewable energy capacity and marks a crucial step toward achieving sustainability goals in the coming years.
