Essar Group has announced that it is advancing a EUR 4.3 billion investment pipeline to decarbonise and transform the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in the UK into a world-leading energy transition hub, with more than EUR 1 billion of projects nearing a Final Investment Decision (FID).

The announcement coincides with 15 years since Essar acquired Stanlow in 2011. Over the past 15 years, the group has invested more than EUR 1 billion in modernising the refinery, including reconfiguring the site into a highly efficient single-train operation, expanding the range of crude grades processed, and upgrading its catalytic cracker, the company stated.

Operated by Essar Energy Transition Fuels, the site recently completed a EUR 100 million refinery turnaround, increasing throughput by approximately 8 percent. The company also commissioned the UK’s first hydrogen-ready refinery furnace following a EUR 70.9 million investment, supporting the site's transition towards low-carbon operations.

Commenting on the development, Prashant Ruia, Chairman of Essar Energy Transition, said, “We are proud to mark 15 years since acquiring Stanlow. It remains a privilege to steward this critical asset, and we remain committed to its future. Our EUR 4.3 billion investment pipeline represents a significant growth opportunity for the UK, supporting the country’s energy transition, generating massive long-term economic value, and creating thousands of highly skilled jobs built on the site’s proud industrial heritage.”

Hydrogen production forms the cornerstone of Essar’s decarbonisation strategy for Stanlow. The company is also evaluating the development of commercial data centres powered by on-site hydrogen-ready generation and plans to expand its retail fuel network with 800 new locations supplied directly from the refinery.
