NTPC Ltd. has awarded Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts worth more than INR 1,391 crore, excluding taxes, to three listed companies for projects across five thermal power stations.

The projects are part of NTPC’s wider strategy to deploy grid-scale battery storage systems at its thermal power stations to improve grid reliability, support renewable energy integration and enhance operational flexibility.

Enviro Infra Engineers Ltd. (EIEL) secured the largest order, receiving a Letter of Award valued at INR 664.33 crore, excluding GST, for BESS deployment at Kudgi Super Thermal Power Station in Karnataka and Ramagundam Super Thermal Power Station in Telangana. The scope of work includes EPC supply and services, followed by comprehensive annual maintenance after successful performance testing. The projects are scheduled to be completed within 18 months from commencement, while maintenance support will continue for 11 years after commissioning.

The award also marks Enviro Infra’s entry into the grid-scale energy storage segment, expanding beyond its traditional business in water and wastewater infrastructure.

Solarworld Energy Solutions Ltd. has received a Letter of Award for a BESS package at Solapur Super Thermal Power Station in Maharashtra under Lot-1. The contract is valued at INR 314.26 crore, excluding taxes, and involves the development of a 132 MW / 264 MWh battery energy storage system. The project is to be executed within 15 months.

The Solapur installation is among the larger standalone BESS projects planned at a thermal power station and is expected to improve flexibility, peak power management and renewable energy balancing in the region.

G R Infraprojects Ltd. has been awarded a Notification of Award worth INR 413.37 crore, excluding GST, for implementing a BESS project at Mouda Super Thermal Power Station in Maharashtra under Lot-1. The EPC contract includes system design, Ex-Works supply, services, testing and commissioning, along with comprehensive annual maintenance for the entire design life of the battery system. The project is scheduled for completion within 15 months from the Appointed Date.

The latest awards underline NTPC’s increasing focus on integrating battery storage with its existing thermal generation assets. By installing BESS facilities at thermal power stations, NTPC aims to strengthen grid stability, provide balancing support for intermittent renewable power and create a more flexible generation portfolio.

While the Solapur package alone will add 264 MWh of storage capacity, the total storage capacity across all five thermal power stations is expected to be significantly higher. All three contracts are domestic in nature and, according to the respective company disclosures, do not involve any related-party transactions.
