ENGIE India has announced that the company has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam (GUVNL) for its first standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in India, with a capacity of 280 MW / 560 MWh.
The company secured the capacity at a tariff of INR 1.87 lakh/MW/month, at GUVNL’s auction held in November 2025, to set up 2 GW/4 GWh standalone BESS projects in Gujarat.
“This milestone reflects a critical shift in India’s energy landscape. As renewable capacity accelerates, large‑scale storage is emerging as the backbone of the power system, enabling grid stability, effective peak power management, and the delivery of clean energy on a round‑the‑clock basis,” the company stated.
With this project, ENGIE strengthens its presence in India’s renewable sector, complementing its existing portfolio of wind and solar assets. The integration of advanced storage technology will allow the company to deliver more flexible and firm power solutions while supporting the country’s transition toward a modern, resilient power system.
Engie India has a portfolio of around 2.75 GW across seven states in India. The company aims to expand its renewable portfolio to 7 GW by 2030.
