Electricité de France (EDF Group) and its subsidiary EDF Renewables, along with Electric Power Development Co., Ltd. (J-POWER) and Yamna Co. Ltd. (Yamna), collectively known as the Consortium, have announced the acquisition of a land block by Hydrogen Oman SPC (Hydrom) for the development of a large-scale green ammonia project in Oman.

Spanning over 341 km2 in the Governorate of Dhofar, this land block will serve as the site for a project with a capacity of producing 1 million tonnes of green ammonia per year.

The Consortium plans to leverage Oman's abundant renewable energy resources by installing approximately 4.5 GW of wind and solar capacity coupled with battery storage, along with an approximately 2.5 GW state-of-the-art electrolyser. The hydrogen produced will be utilized in an ammonia plant to be constructed in the Salalah Free Zone.

The Project Development Agreement and the Sub-Usufruct Agreement were signed by Eng. Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals and Chairman of Hydrom, along with representatives from EDF Group, J-POWER, and Yamna, granting the Consortium exclusive rights to develop, build, own, operate, and maintain the Project for 47 years.

Eng. Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals and Chairman of Hydrom, highlighted Oman's strategic positioning and favorable conditions for green hydrogen production stating, "Oman is strategically located between two key green hydrogen demand centers in Europe and Asia. This, in addition to, our tier-1 infrastructure and logistics capabilities have enabled us to leverage our first-mover advantage in the global hydrogen industry. The availability of renewable natural resources in Oman coupled with the country’s favorable geopolitical positioning, investor-friendly policies, and progressive energy transition strategies make it one of the most suitable countries for green hydrogen production."

Beatrice Buffon, EDF Renewables Chairwoman, and CEO, emphasized EDF Group's commitment to decarbonization solutions and the significance of hydrogen in driving sustainable innovation. J-POWER Executive Vice President, Hiroyasu Sugiyama, underscored the Project's alignment with their strategy to accelerate the transition to carbon neutrality, while Yamna CEO, Abdelaziz Yatribi, expressed enthusiasm for contributing to Oman's energy transition and the global hydrogen industry.

The Consortium's commitment aligns with Oman's National Energy Strategy 2040, aiming to raise renewable energy-based hydrogen production to at least 1 Mtpa by 2030. Detailed studies for the Project's development are underway, signaling progress toward Oman's energy transition goals.
