Dubai is set to take a major step in renewable energy adoption with the introduction of E2SOL’s Smart Solar Highway, a pioneering initiative that will integrate solar panels onto highway median barriers to generate clean energy.
The project, which aligns with Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, aims to enhance sustainability, support electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, and improve grid resilience.
With Dubai’s extensive highway network covering nearly 800 kilometers, the initiative has the potential to produce 612,337 MWh of electricity annually, with 306,168 MWh stored for off-peak and adverse weather conditions. This energy could power around 64,445 homes per year while reducing reliance on fossil fuels and cutting 322,242 metric tons of CO₂ emissions—equivalent to removing over 71,000 gasoline-powered vehicles from the roads.
By leveraging existing infrastructure, E2SOL’s modular solar system aims to provide a cost-effective and scalable solution to boost Dubai’s renewable energy capacity. The project will also integrate with Dubai’s Shams solar net metering program, allowing surplus energy to be fed back into the grid.
The initiative supports Dubai’s growing energy demands, which rose by 5.4 percent in 2024, reaching 59,594 GWh. Currently, clean energy makes up 20 percent of DEWA’s 17.179 GW installed capacity, and the Smart Solar Highway could play a key role in expanding this share.
E2SOL will showcase its Smart Solar Highway at Middle East Energy Dubai 2025, where industry leaders will discuss advancements in sustainable energy solutions.
