Delhi's 23,000 Rooftop Solar Plants Generate 420 MW, Powering 2 Lakh Households

Delhi has expanded its rooftop solar network to more than 23,000 installations generating 420 MW, helping power over two lakh households while delivering significant savings through government-backed solar adoption schemes.

Delhi's rooftop solar capacity has crossed 23,000 installations, generating a combined 420 MW of electricity, enough to meet the daily power requirements of around two lakh households and institutions, according to officials from the city's power distribution companies.

The growth has been driven by strong consumer adoption and government incentives, with rooftop solar emerging as a key contributor to Delhi's clean energy transition.

BSES discoms, including BRPL and BYPL, have energised more than 13,600 rooftop solar connections with a cumulative capacity of around 260 MWp. The installations are helping consumers save nearly INR  200 crore annually on electricity bills, a company spokesperson said.

The financial year 2025-26 recorded the highest-ever annual addition of rooftop solar systems in the BSES network, with around 4,600 new connections commissioned. More than 2,600 of these were installed under the Centre's PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, taking the total number of scheme-linked rooftop solar connections energised by BSES to over 4,100.

Residential consumers account for the largest share of installations, with 9,888 rooftop solar systems. Commercial establishments follow with 2,184 connections, while educational institutions account for 1,009 installations. Other categories and industrial consumers have 342 and 207 installations, respectively.

Officials attributed the surge in rooftop solar adoption to subsidies offered under the PM Surya Ghar scheme and the Delhi Solar Policy. Combined financial support of up to INR 1.08 lakh has significantly improved affordability for residential consumers, encouraging wider adoption of solar power systems.

A typical household with a 5-kW rooftop solar system can save INR 3,500 or more every month, depending on electricity consumption and tariff slabs. Consumers can also earn from surplus electricity exported to the grid at rates determined by the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC).

Meanwhile, Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL), which supplies electricity to North Delhi, has energised more than 10,000 rooftop solar installations with a total capacity of 160 MWp. Under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, TPDDL has commissioned a record 4,375 rooftop solar plants with a combined capacity of 20 MWp.

Officials estimate that, based on an average household electricity demand of 2 kW, Delhi's rooftop solar network is currently helping meet the daily energy needs of more than two lakh households, highlighting the growing role of distributed renewable energy in the capital's power sector.
