Delhi is steadily witnessing a rise in rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojna, with over 17,000 systems installed so far as part of a joint initiative by the Delhi Government and local power discoms.
In an open letter to the city’s residents, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta urged citizens to adopt solar energy, highlighting the financial and environmental benefits. Under the scheme, households installing solar plants up to 3 kW receive a capital subsidy of INR 30,000 from the Delhi Government. In addition, banks offer loans at 6.5–7 percent interest rates for installation.
With combined subsidies from the Centre (INR 78,000) and Delhi Government, consumers can avail a total of INR 1.08 lakh in support. Residents with monthly electricity consumption of 500 units could effectively see a zero-electricity bill after installing a 3 kW rooftop solar plant, along with a generation-based incentive (GBI) of INR 900 per month for five years. Overall, households can expect savings of around INR 3,000–3,200 per month, depending on discom adjustments.
It may be mentioned that, BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd. (BRPL) and BSES Yamuna Power Ltd. (BYPL) have energised 11,100 rooftop solar connections, including domestic, educational, industrial, and commercial consumers, adding over 228 MW of clean capacity to Delhi’s grid. The initiative has empowered households, reduced electricity bills, and cut carbon emissions. To encourage adoption, BSES has been conducting Solar Camps, Surya Rath roadshows, Solar Melas, RWA meetings, nukkad nataks, door-to-door campaigns, and social media promotions.
Meanwhile, Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd. (TPDDL) has crossed a cumulative rooftop solar capacity of 100 MW within its operational areas, energizing over 6,300 installations. These include 4,680 domestic, 1,616 commercial/industrial, and 42 virtual or group net-metered setups. Under these schemes, excess solar power is fed back into the grid, with consumers receiving corresponding incentives.
