Delhi Govt. Plans ‘Solarise Delhi’ Programme to Accelerate Rooftop Solar Adoption

The Delhi government, in collaboration with power distribution companies (discoms), is planning to launch the ‘Solarise Delhi’ programme to accelerate rooftop solar adoption across the national capital by bringing government agencies, resident welfare associations (RWAs), financial institutions and solar vendors onto a common platform.

The programme is aimed at simplifying the rooftop solar adoption process for consumers by providing coordinated support from initial enquiries through installation and commissioning. The initiative is expected to address key challenges related to vendor selection, financing, approvals and net metering.

The programme builds on a pilot initiative implemented in east Delhi by BSES Yamuna Power Ltd. (BYPL) under the Centre’s PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.

As part of the planned outreach, the government and discoms will engage with RWAs, market associations, educational institutions and local representatives. Workshops, consumer camps, information kiosks, digital campaigns, SMS alerts and direct interactions with residents are expected to be organised to raise awareness about rooftop solar.

Officials said that the initiative will help households reduce electricity costs while enabling them to generate clean energy by using available rooftop space.

Under the subsidy structure, households installing a 3 kW rooftop solar system can receive combined financial support of more than INR  1 lakh from central and Delhi government schemes. The PM Surya Ghar scheme provides a subsidy of INR 30,000 for 1 kW systems, INR 60,000 for 2 kW and up to INR 78,000 for systems of 3 kW and above.

The Delhi government offers an additional subsidy of INR 10,000 per kW, capped at INR  30,000 for a 3 kW system. Consumers can also receive generation based incentives under the Delhi Solar Policy, including INR 3 per kWh for systems up to 3 kW and INR 2 per kWh for systems between 3 kW and 10 kW. Group housing societies and RWAs can receive INR 2,000 per kW for rooftop solar installations serving common facilities.

To qualify, applicants must be first time subsidy beneficiaries, have adequate shadow free rooftop space and possess valid electricity connections. Applications will need to be submitted through both the PM Surya Ghar and Delhi Solar portals.
