The Delhi Budget 2026–27 has announced an allocation of INR 3,942 crore for the power department, as Chief Minister Rekha Gupta presented the budget in the Assembly.
Of the total outlay, INR 3,500 crore has been earmarked for electricity subsidy payments, ensuring the continuation of the existing scheme. Under the policy, households consuming up to 200 units per month will continue to receive free electricity, while those using between 201 and 400 units will get a 50 per cent subsidy.
The government has also proposed the creation of a Delhi Energy Conservation Fund to promote energy efficiency and conservation measures across the national capital.
Emphasising a shift towards clean energy, the Chief Minister said the government will push solar adoption under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, along with an incentive-based scheme aimed at boosting rooftop solar installations and moving towards energy self-reliance.
On the infrastructure front, the allocation for shifting overhead high-tension (HT) and low-tension (LT) wires underground has been doubled to INR 200 crore in 2026–27 from INR 100 crore in the previous fiscal. Work has already begun in 28 streets in Chandni Chowk, with an estimated project cost of INR 160 crore.
An additional INR 200 crore has been earmarked for expanding underground cabling in other parts of the city, a move aimed at improving urban aesthetics and enhancing safety by reducing risks associated with overhead power lines.
The latest allocation marks a slight increase from INR 3,847 crore provided to the power department in the previous budget, reflecting the government’s continued focus on subsidies, infrastructure upgrades, and renewable energy adoption.
