Delhi Assembly is all set to become the first Vidhan Sabha in the country to run entirely on solar power.

To this end, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and Speaker Vijender Gupta laid the foundation stone for a 500 KW rooftop solar plant on the Assembly premises.

The project, which will span 3,250 square metres atop the historic building, aims to eliminate the Assembly’s annual electricity bill of nearly INR 2 crore. As per reports, officials say the plant will be ready in just 45 days, well ahead of the original 60-day schedule and in time for the upcoming monsoon session.

Speaker Gupta highlighted the potential savings, noting that the project could reduce monthly power expenses by INR 15 lakh and even generate income through surplus power. Over time, these savings, estimated at INR 1.75 crore annually, could be redirected toward development works, making this more than just an energy initiative. “This is part of our broader modernisation push,” he said, pointing to other efforts like digitising the Assembly library, launching the National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA), restoring heritage elements, and introducing a light and sound show.

LG Saxena praised the solar shift, calling it a commendable step toward sustainability. He emphasised the historical significance of the Assembly building, constructed in 1912, and pledged DDA support to secure its formal recognition as a heritage site. His focus, he said, was to preserve the capital’s rich architectural legacy while embracing future-ready solutions.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also lauded the project, linking it to the PM-Surya Ghar Yojana, which offers subsidies of up to INR 78,000 for homeowners switching to solar. With Delhi’s power demand hovering around 8,000 MW, and expected to hit 9,000 MW soon, she said solar adoption will be key to meeting the city’s growing energy needs sustainably.
