The Delhi Cabinet has approved a new Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy with an outlay of INR 15,000 crore to accelerate the adoption of electric mobility and curb air pollution in the national capital. The policy is expected to come into effect on July 1, 2026, and will remain valid until March 31, 2030.
Announcing the decision, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that the government will invest INR 15,000 crore over the next four years to expand EV adoption, strengthen charging infrastructure, and support the transition to cleaner transportation.
A key provision of the policy mandates that only electric three-wheelers and N1 category goods carriers will be registered in Delhi from January 1, 2027, as part of efforts to reduce emissions from the commercial transport sector.
Delhi Transport Commissioner Niharika said that the policy prioritises segments that contribute significantly to air pollution. According to her, commercial goods-carrying vehicles account for 33 percent of pollution, while two-wheelers and three-wheelers contribute 46 percent. "The policy focuses on these vehicles specifically. We are trying to convert the entire fleet of these vehicles into EV," she said.
The new policy aims to accelerate the electrification of high-polluting vehicle categories while supporting Delhi's broader clean mobility and air quality objectives.
