Coal India (CIL) has announced that it has signed a joint venture agreement with U.P. Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam (UPRVUNL) for setting up renewable energy projects in Uttar Pradesh.

As per the agreement, CIL will hold 51 percent stake in the JV entity to be formed, while UPRVUNL will hold 49 percent stake. The JVC will have an initial paid-up capital of INR 10 lakh and an authorised share capital of INR 10 crore and will have its registered office in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

The JVC will develop RE projects in Uttar Pradesh, including ground-mounted solar, floating solar, pumped storage projects, wind projects and other renewable energy projects, and sale of power and related business activities.

Earlier this week, Coal India received a letter of award to develop two 300 MW solar power projects, totalling 600 MW, at the Jalaun Solar Park in Uttar Pradesh for Bundelkhand Saur Urja.

In May 2025, Coal India signed an MoU with UPRVUNL to set up a 500 MW solar power project in Uttar Pradesh.

Coal India continues to maintain an aggressive renewable energy expansion strategy focused on capacity deployment. The company is targeting 3 GW of renewable energy capacity by FY28 and plans to scale this up to 9.5 GW by FY30.

Further, the company has forayed into the battery energy storage systems (BESS) segment. Last month, Coal India received a letter of award from GRIDCO, Odisha, for setting up four BESS projects with a cumulative capacity of 80 MW/320 MWh across two clusters in Odisha, at an estimated cost of INR 400 crore.

In March 2026, Coal India secured an 187.5 MW/750 MWh BESS project from Telangana Power Generation Corporation at a tariff of INR 3.14 lakh/MW/month. The BESS plant will be set at the Choutuppal substation in Telangana.
