Coal India Scraps Solar Manufacturing Plan, Retains Renewable Capacity Expansion Focus

Coal India has dissolved its subsidiary CIL Solar PV, shelving plans for a 4 GW integrated solar manufacturing facility while continuing to scale up renewable capacity and expanding into battery energy storage projects.

Coal India (CIL) has officially dissolved its subsidiary, CIL Solar PV, signalling a strategic shift away from a proposed entry into the integrated solar manufacturing while continuing to expand its renewable energy generation portfolio.

The subsidiary was established as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to develop a proposed 4 GW integrated solar photovoltaic manufacturing facility covering the complete solar value chain, including ingots and wafers, solar cells and solar modules.

The dissolution of CIL Solar PV, confirmed through a regulatory filing, indicates that the state-owned miner will not proceed with the large-scale integrated solar manufacturing project at this stage.

Despite stepping back from solar equipment manufacturing, Coal India continues to maintain an aggressive renewable energy expansion strategy focused on capacity deployment. The company is targeting 3 GW of renewable energy capacity by FY28 and plans to scale this up to 9.5 GW by FY30.

Further, the company has forayed into the battery energy storage systems (BESS) segment. Last month, Coal India received a letter of award from GRIDCO, Odisha, for setting up four BESS projects with a cumulative capacity of 80 MW/320 MWh across two clusters in Odisha, at an estimated cost of INR 400 crore.

In March 2026, Coal India secured a 187.5 MW/750 MWh BESS project from Telangana Power Generation Corporation at a tariff of INR 3.14 lakh/MW/month. The BESS plant will be set at the Choutuppal substation in Telangana.
