Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has unveiled an ambitious vision to transform the State into a solar power generation hub by promoting widespread adoption of solar energy across homes and offices.
He was speaking at the review meeting on the 'Solarisation' programme organised to encourage solar power generation in the State. Further, highlighting the State’s favourable weather conditions for harnessing solar power, the Chief Minister directed officials to devise and implement comprehensive strategies to maximise the utilisation of renewable energy.
He stressed the importance of educating the public about the economic and environmental benefits of solar power to accelerate adoption and achieve solarisation targets. Naidu proposed that households installing rooftop solar power systems should receive free electricity and be allowed to earn additional income by selling surplus energy back to the grid, thereby incentivizing the transition to renewable energy.
As part of the State’s renewable energy initiatives, the Chief Minister reviewed the progress of the PM Surya Ghar-Muft Bijli Yojana, a central government scheme offering subsidies of up to INR 78,000 for installing a 3 kW solar power system, which costs INR 1.45 lakh. Andhra Pradesh has set a target of implementing this scheme in 30 lakh households, with over 70,000 applications received and solar panels already installed on 4,961 rooftops.
The pilot project in Kuppam constituency has seen significant progress, with 50,312 households committing to adopt solar power, showcasing the scheme's potential for expansion across the state. Naidu emphasised the importance of raising awareness about solar energy and central government schemes like PM-KUSUM and PM-Surya Ghar to ensure maximum participation.
The Chief Minister reiterated his commitment to making Andhra Pradesh a leader in renewable energy, urging officials to accelerate efforts to meet solar power milestones. With comprehensive plans, financial incentives, and public support, Andhra Pradesh is set to emerge as a major player in India’s transition to sustainable energy.
