China's total installed power generation capacity crossed the 4-billion-kilowatt mark for the first time, reaching 4.01 billion kW by the end of May 2026, according to data released by the National Energy Administration (NEA).
The milestone makes China the world's largest country in terms of installed power generation capacity, reflecting the rapid expansion of its electricity infrastructure and clean energy deployment.
The NEA said that non-fossil energy accounted for 62 percent of the country's total installed power generation capacity by the end of May, a significant increase from 25 percent in 2010. During the same period, the share of renewable energy in total installed capacity rose sharply from 24 percent to 61 percent, highlighting China's accelerating transition towards cleaner energy sources.
The administration noted that the pace of growth in installed power generation capacity has continued to accelerate in recent years, driven by sustained investments in renewable energy and other non-fossil power generation technologies.
Commenting on the achievement, Yang Kun, Executive Vice Chairman of the China Electricity Council, said that surpassing the 4-billion-kW milestone would strengthen China's energy security while supporting the country's green and low-carbon transition. He added that the expansion would also enhance China's scientific and technological self-reliance.
Despite volatility in global energy markets caused by geopolitical tensions, China's domestic energy supply has remained stable and well-organised, according to the NEA.
China has also retained its position as the world's largest exporter of wind power equipment and photovoltaic products, contributing to the global clean energy transition through the supply of advanced renewable energy technologies.
