Chandigarh Evolves as Top Solar Power Producer Among All UTs of India

The government of India intends to attain an overall installed solar power capacity of 100 GW by 2022. As of June 30, India’s total installed solar power capacity reached 70.10 GW, with a surplus of 55.90 GW under installation.

Chandigarh has emerged as the top solar power producer among all Union Territories in India, with an installed capacity of 63.59 MW as of June 30. Jammu and Kashmir were in the second top position with 53.29 MW, whereas Puducherry had 43.26 MW.

Another UT with renowned solar power capacity comprises Daman and Diu (41.01 MW), Andaman and Nicobar (29.91 MW), Ladakh (7.80 MW), Dadar and Nagar Haveli (5.46 MW), and Lakshadweep (3.27 MW).

The government of India intends to attain an overall installed solar power capacity of 100 GW by 2022. As of June 30, India’s total installed solar power capacity reached 70.10 GW, with a surplus of 55.90 GW under installation.

Chandigarh’s pledge to tap solar power has been appreciable. Whereas the original target was to attain 75 MW by August 15, the deadline has been extended until December 2023.

The Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science and Technology Promotion Society (CREST) is responsible for executing renewable energy projects in the city.

To become a model solar city, Chandigarh has set a goal of attaining 100 MWp by 2025. Additionally, a path will be developed to fulfill the solar power generation needs of the city by 2030.

Presently, Chandigarh has 23 solar power projects under development, with 20 of them about to complete. These projects will contribute to a renewable and more sustainable future for the city.
