Central Railway to Construct 1 MW Solar Plants at 81 Sites in Maharashtra

In 2023, the railways have already boosted sustainability efforts with solar rooftop plants, and an expanded solar capacity of 135-kWp has been installed at multiple stations.

The Central Railway has declared its plans to set up 1MW solar plants at 81 sites throughout its network comprising one at Ajni, Nagpur.

Shivraj Manaspure, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), said that about 2,700 acres of unoccupied or underutilised railway land have been situated to facilitate the installation of solar systems.

These areas have huge potential for the development of solar power infrastructure and would contribute to further offsetting the carbon emissions of the Indian Railway.

In 2023, the railways have already boosted sustainability efforts with solar rooftop plants, and an expanded solar capacity of 135 kWp has been installed at multiple stations.

Solar rooftop plants have been installed successfully at many stations in the Solapur division, including Osmanabad, Barshi, Wadsinge, Salgare, Parewadi, Mohol, and Tilati.

In the Nagpur division, installations have been completed at Kala Akhar, Pola Patthar, Maramjhiri, Taku, Jaulkhera, and Dodaramohar stations.

In addition, the railways have also won a tender for a 1MW capacity solar plant for the new Ajni electric locomotive shed.

This solar power amenity will enable sustainable energy and assist the railway become less reliant on non-renewable resources through a PPA.

Further expanding its use of solar power and reaffirming its commitment to a cleaner future, Central Railway also has intended to construct a 1MW solar facility in Pune.
