Spanish lithium-ion battery manufacturer Cegasa has recently collaborated with two German companies SMA Solar Technology and Raach Solar for the installation of a solar photovoltaic (PV) plus battery energy storage system (BESS) in New Delhi, India.

This solar plus BESS project has been installed at the ‘Shivalik Grid’ premises of the New Delhi-based electricity distribution company BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd (BPRL), a joint venture between Reliance Infrastructure Ltd and the Government of NCT of Delhi.

Cegasa specializes in the design and manufacture of lithium-ion (Li-Ion) products and solutions for renewable energy applications such as off-grid installations, self-consumption solutions, microgrids, distributed rural electrification, grid quality, peak shaving, load shifting, and electric vehicle recharge.

One of the main challenges in India is the peak power demand amid heatwave conditions and the revival of economic activity from the coronavirus. In June 2022, India’s electricity demand touched a record high of 210.793 GW.

In line with this, the installation is expected to help with and eliminate peak power demands for Delhi Discom BRPL.

The project has been built by Raach Solar, for GIZ India, and has a 100 kWp capacity ground-mounted solar PV plant including Cegasa’s LFP Li-Ion batteries providing 466 kWh (48 Vdc) storage capacity integrated with 27 SMA Sunny Island 8.0H inverters.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), India will account for 25 per cent of global growth over the next two decades and will overtake the European Union as the world’s third largest energy consumer by 2030.

Commenting on the development, Ramón Ugarte, Commercial Director of Lithium-Ion Batteries and Systems at Cegasa, said “at Cegasa we are very happy that our products are useful for various projects around our planet and, in addition, to collaborate with companies like SMA Solar Technology and Raach Solar that share our same vision. There is no greater satisfaction that in this case, our lithium-ion batteries are the solution to a problem that the existing installation cannot cover. Thanks to this, we extend the idea that investing in renewable energies is the future while we respond to an existing energy problem.”

SMA Solar Technology is a German producer and manufacturer of solar inverters for PV systems with grid connection, off-grid power supply, and backup operations. On the other hand, Raach Solar engineers, procures, delivers, installs, and maintains turn-key and tailor-made PV systems worldwide. It also supports the German Ministry of International Cooperation (BMZ) and its technical cooperation agency (GIZ) to help developing countries meet sustainable development goals (SDG).
