The Central Electricity Authority under the Ministry of Power celebrated the sixth edition of Lineman Diwas in New Delhi, recognising the dedication and service of frontline workers who ensure reliable electricity supply across the country. The event was organised in collaboration with Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd.
More than 250 linemen and supervisors from over 66 power generation companies, transmission licensees and distribution utilities from across India participated in the event. The gathering served as a platform for field personnel to share operational experiences, discuss challenges in maintaining uninterrupted electricity supply, and exchange insights on safety practices.
The programme was graced by Shripad Yesso Naik, Minister of State for Power and New and Renewable Energy, who felicitated several linemen for their outstanding contributions. Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary (Power), delivered the keynote address, while Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairperson of CEA, and other senior officials from the power sector were also present.
The event began with a safety pledge, where participants reaffirmed their commitment to following strict safety practices to protect themselves, their colleagues, and the public while performing field operations.
Addressing the gathering, Naik said that Lineman Diwas, observed during National Safety Week, recognises the tireless efforts of power sector workers who maintain electricity supply even under challenging conditions. He emphasised strengthening workplace safety through consistent use of personal protective equipment, proper shutdown verification before maintenance work, and regular training programmes.
He also highlighted the importance of adopting modern technologies such as smart grids, real-time monitoring systems, AI-enabled predictive maintenance and drone-based inspections to detect faults early and minimise risks to field personnel. Referring to the theme of this year’s event, “Seva, Suraksha, Swabhiman', he said it reflects the spirit of service, safety and dignity associated with the power sector’s frontline workforce.
Power Secretary Agarwal described linemen as the “warriors of the power sector”, noting that during extreme weather events or natural disasters, when most people remain indoors, linemen work in the field to restore power and keep the electricity network functioning. He stressed that despite growing automation in the sector, human expertise remains crucial for restoring power systems on the ground. He also urged utilities to ensure that all field personnel are equipped with standardised safety kits and tools.
Agarwal further recommended that power utilities institutionalise safety awareness by making it mandatory to conduct daily safety briefings, including short safety videos and drills before the start of each work shift.
Speaking at the event, CEA Chairperson Prasad highlighted that a resilient and dependable power sector is a key pillar of national development. He acknowledged the dedication of linemen who work in difficult and hazardous conditions to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply.
Prasad noted that Lineman Diwas has gradually evolved into a nationwide movement with growing participation from power utilities, reflecting increasing recognition of the vital role linemen play in supporting the country’s power infrastructure. He added that such recognition must be accompanied by stronger safety measures and empowerment of frontline workers.
Several initiatives were launched during the event to promote safety and awareness among field personnel. These included the release of a special Lineman Geet dedicated to the courage and service of linemen, and the launch of a Safety Pocketbook containing essential guidelines for safe field operations.
A safety awareness video highlighting the risks associated with lightning and precautions to be taken during such conditions was also introduced. In addition, awards were presented to high-performing distribution companies and linemen for their commitment to maintaining a safe and reliable power system.
A special exhibition showcasing advanced safety equipment and tools was organised to encourage hands-on learning and knowledge sharing among participants.
The event was also live telecast across power utilities nationwide, enabling wider participation and collective observance of Lineman Diwas.
