CATL Sets Up 21C Lab to Expand R&D of New Energy Technologies

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) has announced that it has set up the 21C Lab, a new innovation laboratory in east China's province Fujian. This marks the beginning of the company's entry into the very latest technologies in the field of new energies.

The laboratory, named "21C Lab", underscores the company's strong commitment to developing the most advanced technologies, its efforts to become an innovation trendsetter for the 21st century and to bring clean energy into commercial applications as well as everyday life.

Prof. Dr. John B. Goodenough, the 2019 Nobel laureate in chemistry for his work in developing lithium-ion batteries, sent his congratulations on setting up the 21C Lab. “The company is an industry leader in lithium-ion technology, and developments in the 21C Lab team can bring significant benefits to society as a whole. I am convinced that with the establishment of the 21C Lab, CATL can introduce further inventions in battery technology that can reduce the world's dependence on fossil fuels, "he noted in his congratulatory letter.

RMB 3.3 billion will be invested in the laboratory, which is expected to attract thousands of experts and talents within five years. The 21C Lab, which will be built on an 18-hectare property, will focus on the development of next generation electrochemical energy storage systems and new energy conversion systems. The 21C Lab not only works on the further development of metal-lithium batteries, pure semiconductor batteries and sodium-ion batteries, but also on the commercial use of its technology. This includes u. a. the development of reliability models for lithium-ion batteries and non-destructive testing technology. The laboratory is scheduled to start operating at the end of 2021.

"CATL is a high-tech company and is therefore continuously looking for innovations," says Robin Zeng, founder and chairman of the supervisory board of CATL. "The 21C Lab embodies our corporate philosophy of innovation and the basic knowledge to let your imagination run wild. With the help of our innovative mechanisms we can be committed to making further contributions to the development of new energies for humanity. "
