The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has granted approval for the Construction and Operations Plan (COP) of Equinor’s Empire Wind project, marking a significant advancement for New York's offshore wind ambitions.
This milestone paves the way for construction to commence later this year in the federal lease area off the southern coast of Long Island. Empire Wind 1, poised for development, aims to provide renewable energy to New Yorkers by 2026. Furthermore, plans are underway to initiate construction at the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal, transforming it into a major offshore wind hub as early as this spring.
Molly Morris, President of Equinor Renewables Americas, expressed readiness to proceed with the project, citing years of collaborative efforts with BOEM and other federal agencies. “Equinor is grateful for a shared commitment to achieving state and federal offshore wind ambitions and Empire Wind is one step closer to delivering renewable power to hundreds of thousands of New York homes,” said Morris.
Empire Wind has garnered multiple federal approvals, including a Clean Air Act permit from the Environmental Protection Agency and approval from the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service in compliance with the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Additionally, Empire Wind 1 is participating in New York’s fourth offshore wind solicitation.
