BIMSTEC Energy Centre Holds Capacity Building Programme on Emerging Power Technologies
The BIMSTEC Energy Centre conducted a five-day capacity building programme in Bengaluru covering renewable energy, BESS, green hydrogen, CCUS, long-duration energy storage, SMRs, smart grids, AI, advanced transmission technologies and grid-forming converters, with participants from all seven member states.

The programme brought together participants from all seven BIMSTEC member states for technical capacity building, exchange of national experiences and sharing of best practices across the power sector. Participants from Bhutan, India, Sri Lanka and Thailand attended in person, while Bangladesh, Myanmar and the BIMSTEC Secretariat participated online.
The programme covered emerging technologies across power generation, transmission, distribution and end use, including renewable energy, battery energy storage systems (BESS), green hydrogen, carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), long-duration energy storage, small modular reactors (SMRs), smart grids, artificial intelligence (AI) in power systems and the impact of data centre loads.
Advanced transmission and grid technologies, including flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS), high-temperature low-sag (HTLS) conductors, dynamic line rating and grid-forming converters, were also discussed. The India Energy Stack was among the other topics covered during the programme.
The programme combined classroom sessions with technical and industrial visits to power-sector facilities in and around Bengaluru, including the 2,500 MW HVDC Kolar POWERGRID Station, Ohmium International’s green hydrogen electrolyser gigafactory, POWERGRID’s RTAMC, SRLDC/REMC control rooms, CPRI laboratory facilities and the Hot Line Training Centre (HLTC) of NPTI.
The programme was inaugurated by Ghanshyam Prasad, Executive Director, BEC and Chairperson, Central Electricity Authority (CEA), along with Pankaj Kumar, Joint Secretary (Transmission), Ministry of Power. The valedictory session on September 18 was attended by Bhagwan Sahay Bairwa, Chief Engineer, CEA, and included participant feedback, country perspectives and certificates.
The initiative forms part of BEC’s continuing capacity-building and knowledge-sharing efforts to strengthen regional energy cooperation among BIMSTEC member states, particularly in power-system planning, renewable energy integration, energy storage, transmission technologies and electricity trade.
