Power distribution companies in Bihar have improved their performance in national assessments conducted by the Ministry of Power in association with REC Limited, according to official statements.

North Bihar Power Distribution Company secured an ‘A’ rating in the Consumer Service Rating of DISCOMs (CSRD), reflecting performance across parameters such as supply reliability, billing efficiency and grievance redressal.

In the Distribution Utilities Ranking (DUR) report, NBPDCL ranked among the top five state-owned power distribution companies in the country. South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited placed 13th among state-run utilities.

Rahul Kumar, Managing Director of NBPDCL, said the rating reflected improvements in billing and collection efficiency, along with the rollout of smart prepaid meters and technology-led monitoring systems.

Mahendra Kumar, Managing Director of SBPDCL, said the ranking indicated steady progress in operational performance and service delivery, adding that the utility would continue to focus on system upgrades and technology adoption.

Manoj Kumar Singh, Energy Secretary of Bihar and Chairman and Managing Director of Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited, said the results showed structural changes in the state’s power distribution sector driven by policy reforms, technology use and institutional measures.

Bijendra Prasad Yadav, Bihar’s energy minister, said the state government remained focused on improving reliability, affordability and transparency in electricity supply.

The CSRD framework evaluates 66 utilities on consumer service metrics, including reliability, new connections, billing and grievance handling. The DUR report assesses utilities on financial sustainability, operational efficiency, infrastructure and preparedness.

Officials said Bihar’s improved rankings followed measures such as reducing aggregate technical and commercial losses, expanding smart metering and increasing digitalisation in operations.
