BHEL Partners with Norway’s Hystar to Localise PEM Electrolyser Manufacturing in India
BHEL and Norway-based Hystar have partnered to localise PEM electrolyser manufacturing in India, combining Hystar’s high-efficiency technology with BHEL’s engineering and manufacturing capabilities.

By combining Hystar’s technology with BHEL’s extensive engineering, manufacturing and project execution capabilities, the partnership aims for cost-competitive, locally manufactured PEM electrolyser systems for the Indian market.
India has set ambitious targets for the development of a domestic green hydrogen economy through its National Green Hydrogen Mission and the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ initiatives, driving the demand for hydrogen and electrolyser technologies, and building on the backbone of local manufacturing capabilities.
This partnership gives both companies a strategic platform to help lead that growth, pairing Hystar’s patented, high-efficiency PEM technology with BHEL’s deep manufacturing experience and reach across India’s energy sector.
Commenting on the development, Fredrik Mowill, CEO, Hystar, said, “India will play a key role in the global transition to green hydrogen, and the collaboration with BHEL provides a clear path to deploy our unique technology in the Indian market. Notably, BHEL has already entered into a strategic tie-up with thyssenkrupp nucera India for alkaline electrolyser systems earlier this year. “This collaboration with Hystar for PEM electrolyser systems further strengthens BHEL’s position as one of the few Indian players capable of offering both alkaline and PEM electrolyser solutions to serve the country’s emerging green hydrogen market. Moreover, the collaboration will also strengthen BHEL’s project execution capabilities for green hydrogen projects in India,” stated the company.
