Beam Middle East, Masdar City Free Zone Sign MoU on Clean Mobility

Beam Middle East and Masdar City Free Zone have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the deployment of smart-energy and clean-mobility technologies across Masdar City in Abu Dhabi.

Under the agreement, Beam Middle East will assess opportunities to introduce advanced energy systems within the sustainable urban district, including off-grid electric vehicle charging infrastructure, solar-integrated e-bike systems and other clean-energy mobility technologies.

Beam Global, the US-listed parent of Beam Middle East, said that the agreement follows the licensing of its regional operation through Masdar City Free Zone. The two sides will evaluate potential applications for Beam’s energy, charging and mobility products within the city’s infrastructure and innovation programmes.

The MoU is exploratory and does not involve any specified purchase volume, investment amount or deployment timeline. The immediate focus is on assessing technologies that could support lower-emission transport, energy resilience and wider access to sustainable mobility in the UAE.

Beam Global CEO Desmond Wheatley said that the agreement marked a step in the company’s expansion in the Middle East. He said that the company’s mobility, energy-storage and smart-city systems were designed for rapid deployment without relying on conventional grid connections.

Masdar City Executive Director Dr Mohamed Al Breiki said that the partnership would enable the city to evaluate next-generation mobility and off-grid energy technologies, with the assessment focused on their potential contribution to cleaner and more resilient urban infrastructure.

The technologies being considered are aligned with Masdar City’s smart-mobility programme, which serves as a test environment for electric and autonomous transport. The city hosts Abu Dhabi’s Smart and Autonomous Vehicle Industries cluster, or SAVI, which supports the development and commercialisation of advanced transport technologies across land, air and sea.

Masdar City already operates and tests low-emission transport systems, including its Personal Rapid Transit network and electric shuttle services. Its urban planning also emphasises pedestrian-focused mobility and provides an environment for companies to trial technologies in an operating urban setting.

Beam Middle East’s proposed contribution would add an off-grid energy component to the ecosystem. Systems capable of generating or storing electricity independently of fixed grid connections could be deployed at locations where conventional charging infrastructure may be more difficult to install.

Beam Global develops products covering EV charging, energy storage, energy security and smart-city infrastructure. Its off-grid charging systems can combine renewable generation, battery storage and vehicle charging in a self-contained unit, reducing the need for trenching, grid upgrades and permanent electrical works.

Beam Middle East was established through a joint venture between Beam Global and Platinum Group UAE. Under the arrangement, Beam Global provides technology, training and commercial support, while the regional partner contributes business development capabilities and works towards establishing local manufacturing capacity. The venture is headquartered in Abu Dhabi.

Mahmoud Al Hosani, Executive Director of Finance and Support Services at Masdar City, said that the presence of Beam Middle East in the free zone reflected efforts to attract international clean-technology companies and support their regional expansion.

The partnership comes as the UAE pursues its net-zero emissions target for 2050, with transport, power, buildings and industry identified as key areas for emissions reduction. Electric mobility and renewable-powered charging are expected to support the transition as vehicle fleets electrify and charging infrastructure expands.

Masdar City Free Zone hosts more than 2,000 organisations operating across clean technology, artificial intelligence, energy, advanced mobility and other sectors.
